I had no idea how to budget and I also found it difficult to start, but I was determined to learn and take it one step at a time.
Budgeting is one of the foundations of financial well-being. It enables us to manage our funds, avoid unnecessary debts, and reach our financial goals. Creating a monthly expenses list for myself has been one of the most useful budgeting tools to reach my financial goals. In this blog, I will go over the monthly expenses list that I created and I have continued to use to this day. With time, I've learned how to be consistent, stay within my budget, and live within my means.

Step 1: Collect Your Financial Information
It is important to collect every bit of your financial information. These include:
- Income (work, side jobs, any money coming in)
- Statements from bank
- Credit card statements
- Bills (utilities, rent, insurance, etc.)
With all these details in front of you, it will be easy to come up with an all-inclusive and accurate list.
Step 2: Create Expense Categories
To ensure effectiveness in your Monthly Expenses List, classify the way you spend money in different ways. For instance;
- Housing (Rent/mortgage fees utilities)
- Transportation (Vehicle loans, gas, public transport fares)

It is necessary to use the previous spending patterns as a guide in establishing these restrictions – if for example, you have been spending $500 per month on groceries, set such a budget and find ways to make any necessary reductions.

It is good that you engage in daily tracking of your expenditure. However small an expense may appear, write it down. This will help you understand how your money goes out of your account or pocket. You can either update this list easily digitally or else keep a hardcopy for making quick notes.
Step 5: Assess and Revise Your Financial Plan
Examine all costs by the end of every week. Are they within budgets under each category? If you are overspending in one category try compensating this by under-spending in another area.
